The bone is shown clearly sticking out of his leg as men pour water into it. In the opening scene, a man is dragged out of a mine in Ethiopia with a large, bleeding leg injury. The violence in this film is tame save for the very end. This film is very intense, and it’s very mature, although the film isn’t overtly violent, sexual or filled with drugs, the language is extremely perverse and appears in nearly every line of dialogue. Uncut Gems (2019) follows Howard Ratner, a gambling scam artist as he makes his way through a messy trail of lies, deceit and consequences and eventually pays the price for his actions. Overall, Uncut Gems is a film that I would recommend to anyone who is able to sit through it, but it’s totally understandable if you have to back out. The film isn’t unbearable, but it is very tense so if you can’t handle films like Whiplash, Prisoners, Jurassic Park, Parasite, or Memento then it will be hard to watch. There’s also a masturbation scene, but it only lasts around 5 seconds and doesn’t show any nudity.

On top of the profanity, there is also a close-up on a gunshot wound, but it’s probably just pg-13 level violence. However, if your kid has no filter and repeats everything that they hear, this film probably isn’t for them. And if your child doesn’t having a constant-swearing issue, then this film most likely won’t start that.

If your kid is a film lover like me who can tolerate the objectionable content, I would recommend this as it is very, very moving and provides very valuable lessons that, if anything, will convince you not to do what the people in this film are doing. Those made easily uncomfortable with constant usage of profanity, as well as constant angst, should avoid it, but you really have to know your audience. That being said, it should be noted that the language is very, very frequent here- the f-word is used at least 500 times(sometimes over texts), along with use of other foul language. I said 15+, but depending on your child’s maturity and film sensitivity, they could be between 13 and 16 when they first watch it. Uncut Gems is hands down one of the best movies of the year for being a very impactful thriller that’s led by a stupendously impressive performance from Adam Sandler, who abandons his comedic traits for his role here.
